QUESTION

Review the four recommendations in the IOM report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health and find your state’s action coalition. Discuss your state’s action coalition’s work as it aligns with these four recommendations. Is each recommendation being addressed? Based on your analysis of the website, how would you describe your state’s progress toward meeting the IOM recommendations?

ANSWER

The four recommendations of the IOM report include: nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training, nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression, nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other healthcare professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States, and effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and information infrastructure(IOM, 2015). While after researching, there are strides being taken, I do not think that Georgia has met exceeded the goals but progress is being made. The accomplishments to date include:

· Established a workforce center. Held two doctoral symposiums that have brought students and faculty together to develop skills, present new work, and network. Convened advanced practice nurses (APN) from around the state to discuss the state of APN practice in Georgia and begin plans on how to move forward. Facilitated negotiations with the Secretary of State’s office, the Georgia Board of Nursing, and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing to obtain up-to-date workforce data from the recently-revamped re-licensure survey based on the national minimum data set.

Ergonomics

Employee safety extends to their workspaces. For HIM Professionals, this often involves an office, cubicle, or other space that contains a desk, computer, monitor, filing cabinets, and so on. You may be seated at that desk for extended periods, and this can lead to discomfort. In extreme cases it can lead to injuries in your back, neck, eyes, or wrists (carpel tunnel).

“Ergonomics” is the engineering and organization of objects and spaces to minimize physical discomfort and potential for accident or injury. It is very important. As an HIM professional, you will be called on to educate new employees. This should always include ergonomic training as well. You may also be called upon to improve workspaces with ergonomics in mind.

The Joint Commission

The Joint Commission, or simply “TJC,” is an organization formed to accredit medical facilities. It is a private organization composed of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, risk managers, and other professionals. The main concern of TJC is patient safety. The Joint Commission Accreditation is voluntary. However, CMS states that, in order to receive reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid, a health care provider must have completed the accreditation survey and be approved by The Joint Commission. Typically, TJC will visit every 18-24 months to ensure compliance.

HIM Professionals should be aware of what TJC evaluates to accredit a medical facility, because he/she may be called upon to provide needed information or otherwise assist in a TJC audit.

Suppose you worked at a medical facility and were given the assignment to prepare the facility for a Joint Commission audit. Watch the video on the TJC again, and download and view the TJC Readiness Checklist.Preview the document

TeleHealth

It can often be inconvenient for patients to visit a doctor’s office: they must take time off work, re-arrange their schedules, find a means of transportation, and so on. For patients in rural areas, it may involve a long drive, or even a flight if no specialist is available in the region. For these reasons, some medical providers have been exploring ways to provide medical attention remotely, using the telephone.

Watch the following videos on the use of telephone technology to provide health care remotely.

The Internet as a Healthcare Tool

Sometimes patients are afraid to tell their doctor they don’t understand the doctor’s directions or the diagnosis. With the invention of many medicine-based websites, patients can get questions answered more frequently. But, this is a double-edged sword. If the patient gets a website that is not reliable, or they are unable to make sense of the information it contains, they can become unduly scared, or misled to take steps that may not make them well. On the other hand, with the correct information, patients will become more educated about their condition and even help the doctor by relaying things that they thought were insignificant but now realize was actually important.

An HIM professional may be able to recommend specific websites to the patient and encourage them to write down questions to bring back to the next visit. View the two links below to learn more about how to educate patients:

Patient Access to Personal Health Information: Regulation vs. Reality

Release of Information

Unfortunately, there is still much misunderstanding when a patient wants to get information from their medical file. Many patients don’t realize there are standard regulations that are set by governing bodies. Patients have rights under law to access their personal health information, and medical providers are not allowed to deny them those rights as long as certain conditions are upheld. However, this does not mean that medical providers are free to provide that information whenever and however patients desire. For example, a release of information should be signed before a patient is granted access to medical information.

HIM Professionals need to be aware of patient’s rights to access. Read Your Rights Under HIPAA: Your Medical Records (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. to learn more.

Briefly describe a position, role, or project you would like to apply for or participate in. (I WANT TO BE A LABOR AND DELIVERY NURSE)

Alternately, imagine that you are preparing for a performance evaluation. List the questions that you imagine you might be posed.

Respond to each question, highlighting accomplishments from your portfolio that demonstrate your level of competence.

Continue with a succinct summary of the qualities, skills, behaviors, and knowledge your bring to the tasks of patient advocacy, the practice of high quality care, the ability to assess and evaluate patient outcomes, and the leadership skills needed to provide improved patient care. (This should be 1–2 paragraphs in length.)

Conclude with a statement that reflects your understanding of the role of lifelong learning in your career goals.
