College Nursing Papers

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you: Analyze the university’s requirements and provide a proposal to organize all the required data elements.

150 150 admin

A prestigious university has recently implemented a consolidation strategy that will require it to centralize their student records. In order to move forward, the local university will need to develop a data model that will retain student records and perform various data extract transform and load (ETL) processes. Imagine that you have been hired as a database consultant to assist in the development of a data design strategy for the student records.

You met with various university subject matter experts and have determined the following after performing various business analysis processes:

  • Faculty groups are divided by core competencies that the university offers. For example, there are groups such as the Art Faculty, Computer Technology Faculty, Language Faculty, and Science Faculty. Each faculty member has an assigned Dean and is designated to teach at one particular campus and school. They are able to teach as many courses as required.
  • Courses are categorized by course code and title. Certain courses have prerequisites and the university has asked for this to be cataloged as well.
  • There are various schools within each campus. For example, the Los Angeles campus holds the following schools: School of Science, School of Law, and School of Computer Technology. Additionally, each school offers different professional study programs such as Forensic Computer Science, Marine Biology, Business Management, and Civil Engineering to name a few.
  • The study path for students requires that they be enrolled in a specific professional study program. The professional study program requires the students to complete a specific set of core courses. The university also requires that an online grade book be available. The online grade book should show grades awarded to students for specific courses and the term they completed the course.
  • The university identifies each student by his or her name, date of birth, social, and professional study program.

Using these findings, write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

  1. Analyze the university’s requirements and provide a proposal to organize all the required data elements. The proposal should include the following:
    1. Provide an Entity Relationship Model (ERM) that will describe the data structure that will store all data elements. Note: The graphically depicted solution is not included in the required page length.
    2. Describe any assumptions or limitations for each relationship. For example, professors are able to teach more than one course or students can only be enrolled in one program.
  2. Create the primary key and foreign keys using a UML Class diagram for each table.
  3. Suggest at least four (4) types of business intelligence reports that could help the university in course management, student enrollment, or historical tracking. Support your answer by providing specific business functions that these reports could assist executives of the university.
  4. As an alternative for development of the database, you are considering outsourcing the functions above. Research the Internet and other media sources for vendors who develop registrar and school management database systems.
    1. Suggest three (3) vendors that developed and are employing efficient registrar and school management database systems and support your reasons to choose from one (1) of these three (3) vendors.
    2. Compare and contrast the key aspects that each system offers. Examples of system aspects include but not limited to cloud based, pricing model, open source, etc.
  5. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
  • Include charts or diagrams created in any chart or drawing tools with which you are familiar. The completed diagrams / charts must be imported into the Word document before the paper is submitted.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Describe the role of databases and database management systems in managing organizational data and information.
  • Recognize the historical development of database management systems and logical data models.
  • Design and implement a database solution to solve a proposed business problem.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in the strategic implications and management of database systems.
  • Write clearly and concisely about topics related to the strategic planning for database systems using proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions.

Compose a brief overview of the structure and function of plant roots.

150 150 admin

Cooperation and trade are common in the natural world. Based on the cost of production and the constraints presented by the environment, an organism may be more successful by trading for a product than producing it. In this situation the organism may specialize in one product and trade for another. In this SLP we will examine an example of trading partners, mycorrhizal fungi and plants, and compare it to the principles of international trade, an important component of macroeconomics. After you view this tutorial, consider some of the principles it introduced and how they apply to specialization and trade between the symbiotic partners that make up a mycorrhizal association.

In the videos and tutorials you completed for your Case 3 Assignment, you learned about how plants can utilize sunlight to build sugars. Some of these sugars are sent to plant roots for growth and storage. Mycorrhizal fungi live within or surrounding plant roots as a symbiosis. Mycorrhizal fungi cannot make their own food. As fungi, they have the ability to decompose organic (carbon-based) material, but they do not contain chlorophyll and must obtain carbon directly from the environment (like we do!). The fossil record shows mycorrhizal fungi living in association with the earliest plants, bryophytes.

Accessed at http://www.larousse.fr/encyclopedie/divers/h%C3%A9patique/46890

Scientists believe that this symbiosis may have been key to the success of plants on land. Begin your introduction to this symbiosis at the Compost Gardener, and be sure to view their video. Next, proceed to this site maintained by the University of Western Australia, School of Plant Biology: http://mycorrhizas.info/vam.html to complete your research and locate important images for your SLP assignment.

Using the resources provided above, develop a PowerPoint presentation that includes the following:

Slides 1–3

Compose a brief overview of the structure and function of plant roots. Include definitions and images of these terms: epidermis, exodermis, cortex, endodermis, and root hairs. You can refer to the following resource:

Roots:

http://mycorrhizas.info/root.html

Slides 4–10

Provide an explanation of the symbiosis between mycorrhizal fungi and plant roots. Include definitions and explanation of the differences between Arbuscular mycorrhiza and Ectomycorrhizal fungi using the following images:

mycorrhizal fungi image 1.pdf

mycorrhizal fungi image 2.pdf

Ectomycorrhizal Associations.pdf

And the websites: http://mycorrhizas.info/vam.html

Exploring Environmental Considerations when Nursing Critically ill People

150 150 admin

Intent:

For critically ill people and their families, the critical care environment in the Emergency Department or Intensive Care Unit is often foreign and confronting. Together with the illness or injury which led to admission, treatment, medication, hospital routines may affect homeostatic body function and control. These external stressors have the potential to affect the person physically, psychologically, socially, culturally and spiritually in a way which may ultimately compromise healing and recovery. It is imperative that while caring for people who are critically ill, that nurses consider the impact of the environment on the person’s illness, healing, and recovery. An awareness of how the environment affects a person who is critically ill, allows nurses to initiate and incorporate nursing care to support the person through their illness by addressing environmental stressors while undergoing treatment in the critical care setting.

Objectives:

  • Identify concepts and interventions related to the patient experience in the critical care setting including addressing physical, psychological, social cultural, environmental and spiritual needs (GA 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 NMBA 2, 5, 9)
  • Analyse key concepts related to the nurse experience in the critical care setting with regard to ethico-legal dilemmas, total patient care and the impact of the technological imperative (GA 1, 3, 4 & 5 NMBA 1, 2, 9, 10)
  • Reflect on nursing care of critically ill patients using learned concepts and skills in initiating and explaining appropriate nursing actions (GA 1, 2, 4 & 5 NMBA 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9)
  • Demonstrate nursing knowledge through critical thinking and the use of relevant professional and scholarly resources to describe, explain and apply key nursing concepts in a writing style appropriate to purpose and context (GA 1, 3 & 4 NMBA 7)
  • Demonstrate the application of basic skills in the use of information technologies to access and utilise resources and evidence-based guidelines suitable for patient health care needs (GA 1, 3 & 4 NMBA 3).

Task:

For this assignment, choose ONE of the following, and consider how the environmental factors related to the either the Emergency Department or Intensive Care Unit contribute to a critically ill person’s:

  • vulnerability and alterations in autonomy
  • alterations in communication capabilities
  • alterations in privacy
  • alterations in sleep patterns
  • psychological disturbance and delirium

Explore how the environmental factors related to the Emergency Department OR the Intensive Care Unit contribute to your chosen topic and discuss how nurses can provide holistic person-centred care to minimise the impact of the environment and put the patient in the best possible condition for self-healing. In doing so, consider the environmental impact on the patient’s physical, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual components of self.

The assessment is to be written in essay format (third person) using scholarly academic writing skills. Discussion is expected to be well structured, reflective, analytical and well supported with current literature cited in text and in the reference list using Harvard Referencing style.

Introduction:

No subheading. Begin with an introduction, an overview of the work telling the reader what it is they are about to read. This may be done following completion of the body so that all points mentioned in the introduction are present and in sequence with the body and align with the assessment task.

Body:

Be sure your work is well structured and set out in themes. Use specific subheadings that signpost discussion for the reader. Proof read prior to submission to ensure good flow of discussion throughout.

Conclusion:

No subheading. You may like to indicate to the reader by commencing with ‘In conclusion,’, To conclude…’etc, then write a concluding statement where you highlight what you have learned from completion of this work (do not simply describe what was discussed).

  • As a rule of thumb in academic writing you should have 1 reference per 150 words – so for a 1800 word assignment this should be at least 12 sources
  • Spelling – this should be Australian spelling – so make sure your spellcheck is set for this and not US spelling

Where can you find this evidence?

  • Use Australian Literature. The emphasis should be on the Australian experience.
  • Library databases – e.g. CINAHL – use your key words to find relevant articles
  • Google Scholar
  • Professional nursing bodies e.g. NSWNMA, Emergency Nurses’ Association, NMBA
  • Government websites e.g. Australian Commission on Safety & Quality in healthcare (particularly relevant if you are looking at medication safety)
  • Health Department websites e.g. good for finding policies, protocols
  • Make sure you are looking current evidence – so from the last 5-10 years
  • NB: don’t just do a google search – you will not find the best evidence this way
  • Don’t use Wikipedia – this is not an academic source – the reason being that anyone can go in and amend or add information at any time so you can’t rely on the validity/truth of this source
  • Don’t forget to use in-text references to back up your discussion
  • If you don’t include a reference – your discussion will read as your opinion and this does not hold weight in an academic piece of writing

What was the goal of [35S]methionine and [32P]phosphate labeling?

150 150 admin

Corresponding chapter(s) in the textbook: Chapter 19 (and 17)

Review the following terms before working on the problem: human papilloma virus, [35S]methionine labeling, [32P]phosphate labeling, phorbol ester, retinoblastoma protein, immunoprecipitation, SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, autoradiography, pull-down assay, Western blotting

Read the paper and answer the questions below that refers to the data described in Figures 4 and 5 of the paper.

Be prepared to discuss the other experiments described, in class.

Experiment

Human papilloma virus strain 16 (HPV-16) is one of the causative agents of cervical cancer in women. The purpose of the research presented in the figure was to study the mechanism of action of the E7 oncoprotein of HPV-16.

Graph A shows the results of a preliminary experiment. Cells of a human leukemia cell line were cultured without (samples 1 and 3) or in the presence of phorbol ester (samples 2 and 4) and concurrently labeled with [35S]methionine (samples 1 and 2) or [32P]phosphate (samples 3 and 4). (Note: Phorbol ester stimulates protein kinase C.) Cell extracts were immunoprecipitated with an antibody specific for the retinoblastoma protein (anti-RB). SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was performed, followed by autoradiography.

Graph B shows the results of the experiment designed to analyze the function of the E7 protein. Human leukemia cells were cultured in the absence (samples 1 to 3) or presence of phorbol ester (samples 4 to 6). Cell extracts were prepared, and aliquots were incubated with agarose beads to which E7 protein molecules had been covalently attached. After incubation, the beads were sedimented by centrifugation, and Western blot analysis was performed using the anti-RB antibody on the supernatants (S; samples 2 and 5), pellets (P; samples 3 and 6), or total cell extracts (T; samples 1 and 4).

Figure

A) Analysis of RB-immunoprecipitates from human leukemia cell extracts

B) Analysis of RB and E7 protein interactions by pull-down assay (T: total cell extract; S: supernatant; P: pellet)

Questions

1. What was the goal of [35S]methionine and [32P]phosphate labeling?

2. What do bands a and b represent?

3. What does the state of RB protein (graph A) tell you about the cell cycle conditions of the leukemia cells?

4. How did phorbol ester treatment affect the synthesis and phosphorylation of the RB protein?

5. How would the effect of phorbol ester treatment affect the leukemia cell culture?

6. What phenomenon was studied in the experiment that produced graph B?

7. Which form of the RB protein is affected by the E7 oncoprotein?

8. What effect would expression of the E7 protein in the leukemia cells have?
