You will have to prepare a “policy brief” as a final assignment for this course. It will help you explore in greater depth some of the key topics that we cover in class.
You will have to write the brief as if you are the Secretary of Health and I (Dr. Whembolua) am the Minister of Finance of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. You have to choose ONE among the 2 following different health problems (Malaria in Nigeria) and write an individual paper.
Your brief answers five questions that are central to policy making about global health:
• Nature and Magnitude: What is the extent of this health problem?
• Affected Populations: Who gets it?
• Risk Factors: Why do they get it?
• Economic and Social Consequences: Why should the Minister of Finance and the President care about this problem?
• Priority Action Steps: What can we do at least cost and as fast as possible to address the issue and improve the health of our people?
The briefs begin with a summary paragraph – since the Minister of Finance is so busy that he has little time for more than the “30 second elevator speech.”
These briefs should be very concise, precise, and evidence-based. The briefs should use data and be well argued. Make sure to include more information on costs and on comparisons with other countries. It is an individual assignment; make sure you write it individually.
