Write a 600-800 word report explaining what you learn about the purposes and
inspirations of both Frazier and Parks from the information learned in both of these videos. You
may address these videos separately in your report or interweave the content of both talks
within your paper.
You will learn about the conditions, situations, influences, and purposes that each artist
presents. And, in your report, you should discuss the message both artists are making with
their images, and then explain how their compositions express that message. For instance, for
Gordon Parks – who is the figure presented and how does the image reflect the man and his
experiences? For LaToya Ruby Frazier – What subjects does she photograph – why? What
message is she presenting with the people and places she presents. For both, think about how
choices made by the photographers such as color, contrast, texture, line, balance, and other
elements of the composition reinforce the message.
As a point of reference, both Frazier and Parks found inspiration in the artists and writers of The
Harlem Renaissance. For instance, Frazier has said that she was greatly influenced by the poems
of W.E.B. Du Bois (click on both these hyperlinks!), a prominent member of the Harlem
Renaissance, and his writing on the “Negro” experience in American in late-19th and 20th
