we examined the association between a SNP in the PTC gene and the ability of humans to taste bitter compounds. Again, you should arrange this as a practical report with introduction, methods, results, discussion. In total, the report should be 2,000-3,000 words. The methods are what we did in the practical and are included in the laboratory manual from that exercise (but summarise this succinctly in your own words). The results are on Blackboard. You should determine whether there is an association between genotype and phenotype (tasting bitter tastes) using the methods from the second IT workshop. As in the Dog practical report you should comment on whether the DNA extraction and PCR conducted on yourself worked. If you were not present you will have to choose somebody else’s extraction.
In addition you should determine in which gene this polymorphism is (using the sequence from the practical guide), on which chromosome it is, what the structure of the gene is (number of introns and exons), and whether the SNP changes the amino acid. You should look at the gene and position of the SNP in our close relative, the Chimpanzee and discuss this in the light of the paper by Wooding et al. (reference in practical guide).
