Positive Growth: Many of the participants revealed that having an LGBTQ child allowed them to be more open minded which forced them to challenge themselves and step out of their comfort zones. A mother stated that by stepping out of her comfort zone allowed her to become educated, meet new people, confront ignorance, and expand her own acceptance, understanding, and celebration of difference. Some parents said that being more open minded had positive effects on their family relationships because their openness allowed them to reflect on their own relationship with their child. Having an LGBTQ child allowed parents to reconsider and reevaluate their previous beliefs on the LGBTQ community which has helped broaden their attitude about how people look at themselves and their sexual identity. A mother reported that in order for her to truly understand her LGBTQ child she had to learn more about sexual orientation and sexual identity.
Positive Emotions: Many parents reported feeling enhanced positive feelings for their child including a sense of pride in their child and feelings of unconditional love. Some parents felt these feelings branched from their previous feelings but some felt these feelings deepened after their child disclosed their sexual identity to them.
