Literature Reviews: Research Problem/Phenomenon

When discussing the topic of literature review, starting with a definition is always valuable. According to Saunders, M. N. K., Lewis, P., & Thornhill, A. (2015) a critical literature review is a detailed and justified analysis and commentary of the merits and faults of the literature within a chosen area, which demonstrates familiarity with what is already known about the research topic. Torrao, R. (2005) defines an integrative literature review as a form of research that reviews, critiques, and synthesizes a family of literature on a topic in a cohesive way such that a new perspective on the topic can be formed. By doing a literature review a current assessment of the topic can be determined and news ideas can be formulated (Saunders, M. N. K., Lewis, P., & Thornhill, A. 2015).

Walden University Writing Centre (2015a) mentions a misconception of what a literature review really is, some think it is just a summary of the literature on a topic. A literature review is more than that, it is an understanding of what has been written but makes the case for why further research needs to be conducted (Walden University Writing Centre 2015a). A well-researched literature review will allow for all relevant information to be found and new information to be added to what already exists.

Key Components

A literature review is the foundation on which research is started (Saunders, M. N. K., Lewis, P., & Thornhill, A. (2015). The type of review and its purpose will depend on what the research question and the objective of the research are (Saunders, M. N. K., Lewis, P., & Thornhill, A. 2015). The four types of review are, integrative, theoretical, methodological, and systematic (Saunders, M. N. K., Lewis, P., & Thornhill, A. 2015). The review could also be a combination of these types (Saunders, M. N. K., Lewis, P., & Thornhill, A. (2015).

The purpose of the critical review will also depend on what the outcome of the research is intended for (Saunders, M. N. K., Lewis, P., & Thornhill, A., 2015). Some literature reviews with help identify theories and ideas using either using a deductive or inductive approach (Saunders, M. N. K., Lewis, P., & Thornhill, A., 2015). When writing the literature review new theories and findings will emerge which can help demonstrate an understanding of the information (Saunders, M. N. K., Lewis, P., & Thornhill, A., 2015).

According to Walden University Writing Centre (2015a), there are a number of components for a good literature review. Some of the things that should be included are an introduction and a conclusion (Walden University Writing Centre (2015a). Like all good research, it needs a beginning and an end, which is why having an introduction and conclusion are suggested (Walden University Writing Centre (2015a).

Another interesting approach is to have the literature review in the paper organized by themes and patterns, not authors (Walden University Writing Centre (2015a). This approach helps incorporate key ideas which can allow for a quick review leading to an understanding of the topic (Walden University Writing Centre (2015a). This is a masterful way to look at a topic from various viewpoints leading to a better understanding of the topic.

Study’s Viability

When considering the content of the research some things need to be addressed. Saunders, M. N. K., Lewis, P., & Thornhill, A. (2015) suggest the following:Include key academic theories within the chosen area of research that are relevant to or contextualizes the research questionDemonstrate a knowledge of the chosen research is currentTo enable those reading the report to be able to find the original information therefor citing needs to be clear and complete.

When writing the research paper, the researcher should explain the need for the literature review by discussing the importance of the problem (Torraco, R. J., 2005). The notion of a need for a literature review of a topic derives from a condition or situation in which something is required or wanted (Torraco, R. J., 2005). The other issue might be the researcher may be interested in learning more about a phenomenon (Torraco, R. J. 2005). The question of viability comes for seeing if there is value-added to a new thinking in the field of study (Torraco, R. J., 2005). It is important to try and hook readers early to motivate them to read on and see the importance of the literature review (Torraco, R. J., 2005). Others may not share the researcher’s passion but may be persuaded that there is an importance of the information and can bring new information (Torraco, R. J., 2005).

When I am working on my research it will be important to evaluate what information currently exists and determine if any additional research will be valuable. Reviewing other dissertations like Gordon, A (2107) I can see there is a lot of information that currently exists in the specific area that I would like to investigate, however, it focuses on one specific non-profit organization, which indicates there are other things that can be evaluated. This can help determine the viability of the study I am planning to do and can provide a much-needed start to looking at what research already exists.

Critical Analysis

The critical analysis can be broken down into specific parts to better understand what needs to be looked at (Walden University Writing Centre., 2015a). The things that need to consider are the audience and the main purpose, argument and evidence, the method of research that will be used, and the language and tone (Walden University Writing Centre., 2015a). Also, what needs to be considered in the critical analysis is critical thinking, some questioning when doing the research (Walden University Writing Centre., 2015a).

One of the things that will arise when doing the critical analysis is finding some commonalities from reoccurring authors and themes which will bring about interesting information to continue to pursue (Walden University Writing Centre., 2015a). In addition, what is important is to see how the information relates to the research being pursued and how it applies to the current research study (Walden University Writing Centre., 2015a). By doing some critical analysis it will bring about a comprehensive review of what is being looked at.

Conclusion

A literature review is an important aspect of the overall research paper. It is what provides the backbone that helps determine what direction the research is going. It can also help determine if further research needs to be done or how to pivot to find a new approach to a problem. Without the literature review, a research cannot effectively and authentically conclude that a new area needs to be addressed. The literature review justifies moving forward and pursuing this new area of research.
