Feedback:How to write a viable problem statement for a qualitative study:
How to Write an Acceptable Problem Statement – Qualitative Method
Do not exceed 4 or 5 sentences.
Your first sentence has to be SHOCKING! Your 1st through 3rd sentences must have cites.
A viable problem statement is REQUIRED for you to start your doctoral study. The problem statement is a mini story of about 200 words and must include the 4 following elements:
-HOOK (something that hooks the readers' interest about your business problem and comes from the l
iterature and citation is required)
-ANCHOR (a number that identifies the seriousness of the issue – like 1 out of 3 xxxx as it relates to the business issue and comes from the literature and citation is required)
-The GENERAL BUSINESS PROBLEM is xxxxxx. (describe the general business problem as it relates to productivity, profitability, etc. from the perspective of
the leader or manager)
-The SPECIFIC BUSINESS PROBLEM is xxxxx (describe what strategies the leader or manager "lacks"
strategies." ). Use the phrase "lacks strategies" and remember the specific business problem is from the business leader's perspective
Example:
The Consumer Price Index for the state of Tennessee increased 100.1% in 2010 (Consumer Price Index, 2010). This problem has negatively affected Tennessee business owners because they have not been able to increase their staff; and in some cases, downsizing has occurred increasing the unemployment rate to 19.5% in 2010, or roughly 65,000 people (Neeley, 2010). The general problem is that leaders are not utilizing employment saving tools such as telework. The specific business problem is that business owners in the IT industry lack strategies to leverage telecommuting.
Although the rubric statements a maximum word count of 150, the Problem Statement can be effectively written in four sentences; one for each of the four specific components. Do not include any explanatory, prescriptive, or causative information. Often times individuals try to explain the cause of the problem, correlates of the problem, antecedents of the problem, moderators and mediators or the problem, etc. This is not appropriate for the Problem Statement; simply state the problem! The Problem Statement is a concise depiction of the problem. However, it carries a message, that of substantiating the need for the study.
