Over the last several decades, the field of psychopathology and the study of psychological disorders have gradually moved away from exploring social and environmental issues, and moved toward the biological/neurological understanding of disorders. This has led to significant advancements in medication-based treatments.

Treating psychological disorder through medication can often be faster, more effective, and cost less when compared to traditional psychotherapy. At the same time, becoming overly reliant on medication carries substantial risks.

A number of studies have found that psychotropic medications are frequently over-prescribed (Mojtabai & Olfson, 2010; Standish, 2008). Furthermore, the long-term effects of many medications are still unknown.
