- Provide a succinct summary, in your own words, of the key concepts that make up UDL.
People of all ages learn differently and at a different pace. UDL wants to maximize learning for all, which means to reduce the barriers of the school and community. UDL is made up of three words, Universal Design Learning. Universal means the curriculum should be able to be understood by everyone no matter the disability or intelligence. Design means the learning has to be flexible. If things are designed for those who are in the margin, it will work. Learning means what is being learned, how is it being learned, and why is it being learned. UDL helps teachers customize curriculum.

UDL and technology allows flexibility when it comes to education. It may seem like all the students are on the same assignment when working with technology, but the teacher has the ability to change the level of the work. Some students will shut down if they get embarrassed about the modified work they are given. Technology allows those modifications to go unnoticed by the student and other classmates. The teacher and parents will be able to see what level the child is working on and the progress being made. If the child is finding success in the lesson, they will be more likely to continue to actively participate in their learning and in the program. This works for students with or without disabilities. The flexibility works for all ages.

The impact will raise the student’s grades, self-confidence, and success rate in the classroom. By doing all of these things, the kids will want to participate more in the classroom. A positive, self-confident student is likely to be more active in their learning. By reading about UDL, it has allowed me to see different ways to teach the same lesson to a variety of learning levels. UDL is not just for special education teachers anymore. “Although UDL was conceptualized in special education, the focus is on use in general education classrooms (Edyburn, 2013).

UDL is about helping the entire student body/community as a whole, disabled or not. It is up to me to notify my community about the great opportunity we have in front of us before it is time to vote. As an educator, I would make sure the community understood how the upgrades would benefit our schools and learning levels throughout the district. Not only would the younger children benefit from the upgrade, the students in adult education would as well. I would get the word out about this wonderful opportunity by having a power point running at the community event. I would also be there to answer any questions and provide examples of how technology would allow our classrooms more flexibility with all of our students.

Universal Design Learning allows all individuals the equal opportunity to learn. UDL gives learners goals that are flexible, methods for learning, assessments, and materials to meet all learners types of needs. UDL is flexible in that it can be customized to meet individual learners specific needs so that he or she are able to understand the lessons that are being taught in his or her own way.

Technology benefits UDL by being able to create and customize different lessons or material to assist different learners needs. By using technology it is beneficial to UDL because the content can be changed or enhance lessons by allowing students to work at his or her own level or be interactive so that students are engaged. Students who may be ESOL can use technology to assist him or her with images that are associated with the English language. This allows the student to make the connection between the word that he or she knows and the language that he or she are learning. Some students are visual learners so technology can be important by having those students watch a video or read something related to the lesson where the main parts are highlighted and the student can see that. Other students are kinesthetic learners so working with technology will allow those students to move around. An example would be using the smartboard for an interactive lesson where the student gets up and participates in the lesson. Using technology can benefit different types of learners because once an educator knows how his or her student learns best he or she can create different programs or use different technology to assist him or her.

I use technology in a variety of ways in my classroom. My students are able to watch videos on different social skills that we are learning about and they get to see different examples. We also use technology to play games to enhance the student’s learning. Students also have access to tablets and laptops to play “games” that are geared towards his or her learning ability and allow them to excel in different subjects. Students stay engaged more when technology is used because this is a part of their every day lives.

I would use what I have learned about UDL for my Week Six Final regarding how if technology is implemented into the school I am at then students would be able to learn in a way that is fit for him or her. I would discuss the advantages of UDL and how it would benefit students in different areas and also with different learning styles. Giving examples of how it would benefit students will allow them to see how important it is to implement this technology into the school.

Universal Design Learning gives all students in every classroom an equal opportunity to learn. The key concept that makeup UDL is making a curriculum that can meet the needs of all of the students. The lessons will ensure all of the students are engaged and interested in all of the lessons that are being designed for the students. The lessons will be flexible and will provide support to all students. The three UDL principles which are; representation, action, and expression and engagement will ensure that the students are given different ways to learn such as through books and videos, allow students to use their knowledge, and allow the students to make choices in their education (UDL at a glance, 2010).
UDL and the incorporation of technology can be used to individualize learning for students with varied backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities by giving the student many ways to learn through games, read aloud books, and by providing math support through games and websites. By allowing the students to learn at their own pace through reading programs and math programs will give students the flexibility to learn without being rushed by the other students or by being held back by other students. Reading and math websites and learning applications can assign students lessons based on their reading level and math level. The teacher can assign the work to the students and they can work at their own pace. Technology keeps students interested in what they are learning especially if they are learning through games because the lessons seem a little more fun and are more interactive than the traditional teaching classroom.
The impact that UDL may have on my future professional role is that I will have the ability to provide all of my students with support through the use of UDL and technology. It is important that the students in my class are engaged and interested in the lessons they are being taught. Using technology will give my students the flexibility they will need to be able to have a universal design learning experience.
I might include UDL in my week six final project by having a booth that explains that another benefit of using technology in the classroom is that using technology will help the teachers have universal design learning experiences for the students because technology will help provide students with a flexible learning experience, provide support when needed, allow students to learn anywhere, and provide them a variety of ways to learn. In the booth, I will provide examples of some of the technology that will support the student’s flexibility and custom learning.
