Hollywood has made over 4000 films about Native people over the past hundred years. Reel Injun takes a look at how North American Natives have been portrayed in Cinema over the past hundred years.

Wordcount: 350-600 (should be 2-3 pages)

Part I: Go through the history of how Native Americans have been portrayed at different times in Cinema: during the early years of cinema, pre-great depression, after the great depression, during the 60s, during the 90s, and into present day. Describe what cultural reasons existed in each time period that would make Hollywood choose to portray First Nations people in the manner that they did.

Part II: Describe what happened at Wounded Knee and Alcatraz. What part did Sacheen Littlefeather and Marlon Brando play in Wounded Knee? What do you think about protests like these – what do they accomplish?

Part III: Discuss some of the problems that the documentary discusses that come from Natives being portrayed in the ways that they have been. One of the points raised was the idea that these films presented a singular “pan-Indian” culture that never actually existed. What is another instance of an art form that groups many cultures into one stereotype, and what effect do you think that this sort of stereotyping has?

Part IV: Think about the summer camp where children “played” at being Indian.  What do you think of situations where members of one society pretend to be members of another society like this?
