You are to write a four (4) to four and a half (4.5) page essay in which you identify and develop a thesis based upon THREE points of comparison between 2 of the following texts: Susan Glaspell’s Trifles, and Maria Irene Fornes’sMud. In your essay, be sure to think about the themes the authors are portraying. Your comparison should inform your audience about how the playwrights view marriage, family, gender role expectations of women and/or of men, socio-economic status, and/or the merits of someone attempting to improve their life.
To write this paper, you will need to use the thematic skills we called upon for our first essay. Additionally, you will find three points of comparison between your chosen plays and discuss them thoroughly. You are expected to refer to the dialogue, stage directions, setting, characterization, plot, symbolism, theme, and/or any other aspect of your choosing in your discussion.
You will incorporate 2 secondary sources into this paper. Your sources can be play reviews, playwright interviews, editorials, or scholarly research articles about the plays. Regardless, you must use these sources to support your three points of comparison. It is acceptable for both sources to be located online. At least one source must be found through the EbscoHost or Academic Search Premier databases that can be accessed from the library homepage. The essay must have a clearly articulated main idea (thesis statement). A thesis statement is a concise presentation of the main point you are making in the paper. For all the papers you write in this class, the thesis statement should be the last sentence in the first paragraph. This is where I will look for it. The essay must have a title that conceptualizes the essay's main idea. The title of an essay is NEVER simply the title of the texts you are writing about. Always refer to writers by their last names and do not use titles: e.g. Nora, not Pierre or Mr. Nora. Include a works cited list (bibliography) prepared in MLA format for your essay and the text that you write about. Be sure to follow correct format: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ Any paragraph that is less than five (5) sentences long is not sufficiently developed. Any paper that is not four (4) pages long is not sufficiently developed. You must visit the writing center at least once during the writing process, and make sure that a writing center visit ticket is sent to my TCC email account. All papers must be typed, proof read, spell checked, and correctly formatted.Use sample paper as a model for headings, margins, spacing, and where to place works cited:https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/13/
There are penalties for not following directions, and for lateness. Any paper not submitted viaBlackboard by 3-27 will be counted late. Papers lose one letter grade per day late, and will not be accepted more than one week (7 days) late.
